About Bill
|
 |
Bill was born and
raised in central California.
He was brought up in a thoroughbred racing family
so horses were a big part of his life. A near
fatal racing accident for his father when Bill
was a small child would have an unexpected impact
on his life. It would later become clear that
the biggest factor in his father’s accident was
that lack of preparation for the horse. Like all
too many horse related activities and competitions
in the past and present, horses were not getting
the chance to prepare mentally for what was being
asked of them physically.
While trying his hand at rodeo in his early years,
Bill started to learn the benefit of “reading the
animal”. Although rodeo star he was not, the lessons
learned about animal behavior would become
invaluable to him as his horse career blossomed.
Bill started working with horses in his late teens.
His first horse employer/mentor was Dale & Eddie
Raymond of Raymond Arabians. Dale’s “firm but
with finesse” approach to horsemanship was a vast
contrast to Bill’s “let’em dance” mentality. The
circumstances of Bill’s father’s accident started
to have a deeper impact. The vision of thinking
with his heart and not his hand or heel was coming
into focus for him.
Over the next several years horses would play a
vital part in Bill’s life. While stationed overseas
in the U.S. Army, Bill’s ability to seemingly read
the horse’s mind and predict their actions was
intriguing to those around him and a rewarding
retreat from his military life.
Once back in the U.S. and a civilian again, Bill
choose horses to be his career. He has spent the
years working with horses from racing to breeding,
moving from California to Kentucky and New York
before settling in Michigan. Bill spent this time
learning from each and everyone he came in contact
with. From trainers and breeders to Veterinarians
and horseshoers, they all had something Bill could
and would learn from them. Taking all his
experience and knowledge he had learned over his
life, Bill choose to combine that with his love
and natural ability to understand horses and
started Common Sense Horsemanship.
Bill’s goal is to give the horse a chance to
succeed and to recognize when they understand and
when to give them a little more time to work it
out. He helps strengthen the relationship between
horse and rider by teaching the rider patience and
an understanding of their horse.
